Loading luggage onto the cruiseship |
Retrieving luggage from the dock |
|
With the expanded cruise ship facility at Canada Place,
it is possible for three ships to be tied up at
one time. This means that over 10-12,000 passengers
could disembark simultaneously, while an additional
10-12,000 passengers could be waiting to embark for
their trip to Alaska. Additionally, if two cruise ships
are berthed at Ballaentyne Pier, it brings the
total number of ships that could be in Vancouver on any
given day to five. Obviously, it makes sense to stagger
the arrivals and departures of ships in any one day as
well as over the week!
It takes over 50 longshoremen to handle each ship after
it ’s moored. It’s a tremendous job just getting the
luggage of departing passengers off a ship and sent to
the appropriate place and then loading the luggage
of passengers waiting to get on the ship for the next
trip. If each passenger has two or three pieces of
luggage, it means the longshoremen responsible for
handling baggage for the largest cruise liners would handle 7,800 suitcases per ship.
