Ah, the food! If there’s one thing cruise ships are
famous for, it’s the amazing variety and presentation of
food! Some ships require passengers to choose first
seating (for earlier dining) or second seating; other
options include eating at any of the various cafes or
restaurants on board. Note that some of these require
reservations. Small cruise ships may have only one main
dining area. Most ships can accommodate room service and
some guarantee 24-hour availability of room service.
Passengers with special dietary specifications should
advise the booking agent or speak to the maitre d’ upon
coming aboard. Meal offerings feature a number of entrée
selections, including vegetarian or light menu choices.
Check ahead of time to see if kosher, diabetic, no
dairy, low salt, low cholesterol, low-carbohydrate or
other dietary requirements can be accommodated.
Some ships have dress codes for occasional formal and
semi-formal evening meals. Other cruise lines have all
evening meals specified as casual dress. Check with the
cruise line or travel agent to match your preference to
the appropriate ship policy.
A few smaller ships provide all-inclusive service that
includes liquor. However, most ships charge for
alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, although there may
be complimentary beverages at special receptions. Most
cruise ships set-up a stateroom account when guests
first check in to pay for such purchases. At the end of
the cruise, accounts are settled with the purser with a
credit card, traveler’s cheques or cash.

While the variety and amount of food served on board is
memorable, it would be a shame to miss out on sampling
some local cuisine. Whether you’ve got a hankering for
homemade ice cream, need a great cup of coffee to
rekindle your energy, or are eager to sample Alaskan
seafood or moose burgers, you’ll find everything from
tiny coffee shops and cafes to elegant dining
establishments when you go ashore. Ask locals for a
recommendation or try your own culinary adventuring!
Part of the fun is people watching and the opportunity
to talk with locals.
