Alaska’s state capital is considered one of the most
scenic and cosmopolitan cities in Alaska. Approximately
half of Juneau’s 30,000 residents work for the
government. During summer months, the streets bustle
with tourists and cruise ship passengers. Most downtown
buildings retain their original facades, with abundant
shops and art galleries. Strolling Franklin, Seward and
Front Streets provides a delightful step back in time.

Attractions:
- The city’s museums include the excellent Alaska State
Museum (Whittier Street and Egan Drive), the Last Chance
Mining Museum and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.
- The Mount Roberts Tramway and observation deck offers
stunning views. Purchase tickets from the base station
near the cruise ship docks. At the top, the Mountain
House (Shaa Hit) offers the Chilkat Theater, Native
gifts and dining.
- The hardy will enjoy the 7.6-mile (12 km) round trip
hike to the top of Mount Roberts. The trail begins at
the end of 6th Street and the views from the top are
memorable.
- Boat rides up Lynn Canal offer viewing of the humpback
whales that come there in summer to feed.
- Tours or a reasonably priced bus shuttle take visitors
to Mendenhall Glacier, 13 miles northeast of Juneau.
Walking maps are available at the renovated visitor
center.
