Since 1986, nearly 14 million visitors have sailed from
Vancouver or Seattle, up the Inside Passage, to visit
the Alaskan ports of Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and
Skagway and at least one glacier visit.
Homeport economics: The economic impact of this number
of cruising tourists is huge. Each homeport ship
departing Vancouver adds approximately $1.5 million to
the local economy. In 2004, the Port of Vancouver
estimated 13,200 direct, indirect and induced jobs
created by the cruising industry.
Visitor economics: According to a 2003 study conducted
by the North West CruiseShip Association, 900,000
visitors came through the Port of Vancouver, with
passengers and crew spending $268 million dollars in
British Columbia. In 2004, 33 ships sailed to Alaska on
their itinerary, 19 ships visited Vancouver, two called
into Prince Rupert and six into Victoria.
